GA state health plan losing financial ground

Monday, July 19, 2010
The health insurance benefits for state workers are in danger of losing financial ground, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Over 680,000 state workers receive health insurance through the State Health Benefit Plan, which could go broke by next spring. Consequently, state workers will see their contributions increase by ten percent for a second time in two years. The state Legislature has already shifted $33 million from the state treasury, and is applying for $100 million in federal money, to meet their obligations for these benefits. The fund paid out about $2.8 billion in benefits last year.
